What is Carotid Doppler ?
Carotid Doppler, also known as carotid vascular ultrasound or carotid duplex ultrasound, is a medical non-invasive imaging technique used to assess and evaluate the blood flow in the carotid arteries, which are one of the major blood vessels located in the neck. The carotid arteries supply blood to the face and brain, and any diseases or blockages in these arteries can increase the risk of stroke or other vascular diseases.

Carotid Doppler scan is primarily used for the following purposes:
- Assessment of Plaque and Atherosclerosis: It helps in detecting the buildup of fatty and lipid deposits (atherosclerotic plaques) on the inner walls of the carotid arteries. These plaques can narrow the carotid arteries, reducing blood flow and increasing the risk of stroke and brain diseases.
- Evaluation of Stenosis: The degree of stenosis (narrowing) in the carotid arteries is measured. Severe stenosis can be an indication for urgent surgical intervention to prevent stroke.
- Monitoring Blood Flow: Carotid Doppler can monitor and evaluate blood flow in real-time images, helping doctors assess the effectiveness of treatments like medication or surgery.
- Stroke Risk Assessment: It assists in assessing a patient’s risk of stroke, especially for those with risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a history of strokes.

Carotid Doppler is a non-invasive and relatively safe procedure that does not involve any type of radiation. It is commonly used in vascular and neurological medicine to evaluate the health and condition of the carotid arteries.
Timing:
Duration: The test itself is usually relatively quick and painless, lasting around 15-20Â mins.
Preparations before exam:
- Wear relaxed clothes.
- Remove any jewelry or necklace before the exam as they can interfere with ultrasound probe during scan.
- If you smoke or take nicotine, avoid them 8 hours before the carotid ultrasound exam as they can constrict your vessels.
