It is a special type of ultrasound used to assess the reproductive organs in both men and women.
Here is how fertility scan works and what it can help in diagnosing:
For Women:
- Ovaries Assessment: Fertility scan can help in assessing the size, shape and structure of ovaries. It can help in identifying diseases like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), tubal blockage and other adnexal pathologies that cause infertility.
- Uterus Evaluation: It helps in visualizing uterus and endometrium with very fine details. Common uterine abnormalities that cause infertility include uterus polyps, fibroids, and endometrial adhesions can be diagnosed easily by this scan.

Monitoring of Fertility treatment: It is also helpful in monitoring the response of fertility treatments like IVF or others.

How it is performed:
Fertility scan is done via Transvaginal ultrasound scan (TVS). TVS is performed with an empty bladder. Ultrasound probe is covered with a sterile sheath and lubricant and is inserted into the vagina. Probe emits ultrasound waves and images are taken and viewed on the monitor of the ultrasound machine.Â
For Men:
- Testicular assessment: In men, fertility scan can assess and examine the testes and scrotum for any abnormality that may influence sperm production and quality such as varicocele, hydrocele, tumors etc.
- Prostate and Seminal vesicles: The scan may also evaluate seminal vesicles, epididymis, prostate and other male pelvic structures to look for any condition that can cause infertility such as prostatitis, seminal vesiculitis, spermatocele and epididymal irregularities.
