Early pregnancy scan also known as dating scan is a medical ultrasound scan used to detect early pregnancy inside uterus. This ultrasound is usually performed in first trimester of pregnancy, usually between 6-11 weeks after the last menstrual period.
Why Early pregnancy scan is performed?
Here are some of the reasons why an early pregnancy scan is needed or indicated
Confirmation of pregnancy : The main aim of dating scan is to confirm the pregnancy and to locate the fetus inside or outside the uterus.
Determination of fetal age : The scan also helps in determining the gestational age and fetal age and guides about expected delivery dates.
Assessing the pelvic organs of mother: Early pregnancy scan is also used to see the uterus and ovaries of mother and to assess any changes in them that are caused by pregnancy.
Preparation:
An early pregnancy scan or dating scan doesn’t need any specific preparation. You may need a full bladder for better visualization of uterus and embryo.
Timing:
Early pregnancy or dating scan needs 15-20 minutes.
