FAQ

An ultrasound can confirm pregnancy as early as 4 to 5 weeks following the last menstrual period (LMP).

At this stage, a gestational sac might be seen in the uterus and followed by yolk sac at 5 – 5.5 weeks. Fetal heartbeat may be visible at 5.5 – 6 weeks through transvaginal scan and 7 weeks from transabdominal scan. However, it might differ from each case.

If your pregnancy is less than 8 weeks, the transvaginal approach is advised as it provides better visualization and clearer images.

After 8 weeks, the scan is performed transabdominally where the Sonographer will scan your tummy. You will need a full bladder for this scan.

Some blood test needs you to be fast 8 – 12 hours before the test but you can drink plenty of water 24 hours before your appointment. This will make the blood drawing process easier.
 
You have to avoid alcohol 1-2 days and strenuous exercise before the test as they can affect some test results.
 
On the day of appointment, you are advised to wear loose and comfortable clothing to allow easy access to both arms and hands. If you need assistance, you can always give us a call and we will explain to you.
Routine first trimester ultrasound scan is done between 11 and 14 weeks as recommended by ISUOG Guidelines.
This scan is important to confirm viability, accurately determine gestational age, and to identify singleton and multiple pregnancy.
 
In the case of a multiple pregnancy, it is crucial to determine chorionicity and amnionicity during this stage as the characterization is most accurate. This will help the Obstetrician with better patient management for example the frequency of ultrasound scan needs to be done will be different according to the types of multiple pregnancies.
No, you do not need to get a GP referral for a blood test.
It generally takes 2- 3 business days to process and release your test results. However, processing times may vary.
