What is an NT scan and why is it done?
An NT scan, or Nuchal Translucency scan, is a prenatal ultrasound performed between the 11th and 13th weeks of pregnancy. It measures the thickness of the fluid-filled space at the back of the baby’s neck. This measurement helps assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.
When is the best time to have an NT scan?
The optimal time for an NT scan is between 11 weeks and 13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. This is when the measurement of the nuchal translucency is most accurate. It’s important to schedule the scan within this timeframe for the best results.
What does the NT scan involve?
An NT scan is a routine ultrasound examination. The sonographer will use a gel and a transducer to create images of your baby. The thickness of the fluid-filled space at the back of the baby’s neck will be measured. You may also be offered blood tests to further assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
What if the NT measurement is high?
A higher-than-average NT measurement doesn’t necessarily mean your baby has a chromosomal abnormality. It simply indicates a higher risk. You may be offered additional tests, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, to confirm or rule out any potential issues. It’s important to discuss the results with your healthcare provider to understand your options.
Is the NT scan safe for the baby?
Yes, the NT scan is considered safe for both you and your baby. Ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that has been used for many years without harmful effects.
Can I choose not to have an NT scan?
Yes, the decision to have an NT scan is entirely yours. However, it’s important to be aware of the potential benefits of the scan in assessing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities. Your healthcare provider can discuss the pros and cons of the scan with you to help you make an informed decision.
