Check-up your blood sugar levels and detect the presence of diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetes, if left untreated, can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, nerve problems, and vision impairment.
You can ideally have this test done in the morning after fasting overnight or for 8-12 hours.
How to prepare for the blood test appointment?
- Â Â Â Drink plenty of water 24 hours before your appointment. This will make the blood drawing process easier.

- Â Â Â Avoid strenuous exercise before the test.
- Â Â Â Wear loose and comfortable clothing to allow easy access to both arms and hands

Insulin is a hormone that allows cells to uptake and utilize glucose (obtained from food) from the bloodstream as a source of energy. In diabetes, insulin is insufficiently produced, which leads to the accumulation and rise of glucose levels in the blood.
Hb A1c is a blood test that analyses and reports your average glucose levels for the last 2-3 months. It examines the amount of blood glucose attached to your haemoglobin.
Whenever sugar enters our bloodstream, it gets attached to haemoglobin present in our red blood cells.
Although everyone has some glucose attached to the haemoglobin part of their red blood cells, people with high blood sugar have more.
Thus, if your blood glucose mostly stays high, your Hb A1c will be high. Similarly, if your blood sugar mostly stays low, your Hb A1c will be low.
