While you may not always need a referral from your GP to attend, for certain cases referral letter is needed to ensure that the appropriate examination is conducted based on your specific medical needs.
Lower abdomen ultrasound or Pelvic ultrasound is used to assess and diagnose various conditions and concerns related to the female reproductive systems, as well as other structures in the pelvic area. Pelvic ultrasounds are done for various reasons, including the evaluation of lower abdomen pain, pelvic pain, heavy or abnormal bleeding, infertility issues, suspected ovarian, adnexal or uterine abnormalities, and monitoring the progress of pregnancy.
The specific focus of the ultrasound examination may vary depending on the patient’s symptoms, gender, and clinical history. Here’s what a pelvic ultrasound typically includes:
- Uterus: Uterus size, shape, diseases like fibroids, cysts, polyps and masses.
- Endometrium: Its shape, size, thickness, polyps, tumors.
- Ovaries: The ovaries are examined for the presence of cysts, tumors, or signs of conditions like ovarian cysts or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Cul-de-Sac: Cul de sac is potential space between uterus and rectum and is examined for the presence of fluid, abscess, blood and tumors.

Preparation before the exam:
For lower abdomen ultrasound, you need to fill your urinary bladder adequately.
Please wear relaxed and comfortable clothes at the time of the ultrasound.
How is this exam performed?
The patient is asked to drink 500 ml to 1L of water one hour before the scan so that the urinary bladder can be filled adequately. The patient is asked to lie down on the examination couch. An ultrasound probe is placed on the skin over the pelvic area to see underlying pelvic structures. In some cases, an additional TVS- (transvaginal scan) is needed to see female pelvic structures more clearly. TVS is typically performed with an empty bladder. An ultrasound probe is covered with a sterile sheath and lubricant and is inserted into the vagina. Probe emits ultrasound waves and images are taken and viewed on the monitor of the ultrasound machine. The consultant then views these images and makes the final report.
Time:
Lower ultrasound will take approximately 30 minutes.
After a thorough examination of the ultrasound images by our Consultant Radiologist,
expect the report to reach your GP within 2 working days from the date of your scan.
