What is an anomaly scan and when is it done?
An anomaly scan or the 20 week morphology scan is a detailed scan to check any structural abnormalities of the baby. It’s typically performed between 18 – 22 weeks of pregnancy. We recommended you to have this scan at 20 weeks.Â
What does the anomaly scan check for?
An anomaly scan is a detailed prenatal ultrasound scan which we examine the brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys, and limbs, to look for any structural abnormalities or deformities. This scan also enables us to monitor the baby’s growth and development to ensure the baby is growing at a normal rate. Additionally, we can assess placental position, amniotic fluid levels, and determine the baby’s gender. Measuring the maternal uterine artery blood flow is also part of the scan. High resistance in this flow will increase risk of preeclampsia and lead to fetal growth restriction, causing the baby to be smaller than expected for the gestational age.
What happens if an anomaly is found during the scan?
Is there anything I can do to prepare for the anomaly scan?
How long does the anomaly scan take?
The anomaly scan typically takes around 30-45 mins depending on the baby’s position. If the baby is not in ideal position, you might asked to walk around to help move the baby into a better position. If any abnormalities are detected during the scan, we will need to take additional images, thus the scan might take longer. It is advisable to setting aside extra time around your appointment can help you accommodate any possible delays.Â
