What is a cervical length scan?
A cervical length scan is a transvaginal ultrasound used during pregnancy to assess the risk of preterm birth by measuring the cervix. A measurement under 2.5 cm indicates a short cervix, which is linked to a higher risk of preterm delivery. This scan is recommended for women at risk of preterm labor, including those with multiple pregnancies, a history of preterm birth, uterine abnormalities, or previous cervical surgery.
The scan is ideally recommended between 16 to 24 weeks gestation for asymptomatic women with history of preterm birth. Often, this scan is performed along with the anomaly scan.
While a shorter cervix can increase the risk of preterm birth by causing early dilation, it doesn’t guarantee preterm delivery. Many women with a short cervix still manage to carry their pregnancies to term. If a short cervix is identified, healthcare providers may suggest interventions to help reduce the risk of preterm labor.
What can be done if my cervix is short?
By detecting short cervix or cervical incompetency earlier, this allows the Obstetrician/healthcare providers to recommend appropriate treatments such as cervical cerclage, progesterone hormone therapy (usually in the form of a vaginal tablet), and an interval scan to monitor the cervical length. Thus, help to prevent preterm labor and improves outcomes of preterm labor for those at risk.
A transvaginal cervical length ultrasound is usually quick and not painful, though some may find it a bit uncomfortable.
The accuracy of transvaginal ultrasound in measuring cervical length is well-supported by research, highlighting its importance in managing preterm birth risk. It is a safe procedure throughout pregnancy, even with preterm rupture of membranes.
