Follicular Tracing Ultrasound

Follicular tracking or follicular tracing or ovulation monitoring scan is a diagnostic ultrasound procedure used in gynecological studies to monitor the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles.

Purpose:

Follicular tracking ultrasound is used to track and monitor the growth and development of follicles inside the ovaries. It is performed for following reasons:

  • Evaluation of bilateral ovaries and fallopian tubes
  • Evaluation of ovaries and tracking of follicles in polycystic ovarian disease.
  • Assessment of infertility in patients of primary and secondary infertility.
  • Assistance in procedures such as IVF

Dublin

Procedure

During the ultrasound, transvaginal ultrasound probe is inserted gently into the vagina and a close up and clear view of both ovaries is taken. Sonographer or ultrasound technician will measure the size of ovaries and follicles and will document their size and appearance. Consultant Radiologist will finalize the report.

Preparation and Timing of scan

Patient is asked to empty her bladder prior to ultrasound. Follicular tracing ultrasound is initiated around 3rd to 5th day of cycle. It is then repeated after every few days until dominant follicles reach their maximum and optimum size for ovulation and IVF. It usually takes 15-30 minutes to complete the whole procedure.

Your results will be sent directly to your GP / Healthcare Provider.
