LUMPS and BUMPS
A soft tissue ultrasound is used to examine lumps visible or felt in any part of the body or where there is an unexplained pain at certain area. Ultrasound is the best imaging modality of choice in the assessment of palpable soft-tissue abnormalities compared to MRI as ultrasound is a widely accessible, fast, and cost-effective imaging modality that can also evaluate the vascularity of the lesion.
This imaging technique can distinguish between cystic (fluid-filled) and solid lumps. Ganglion cysts, lipomas, and sebaceous cysts are the most common causes of lumps in the body and are often easily identifiable on ultrasound.
The soft tissue ultrasound is advised to evaluate the following conditions:
- Palpable masses
- Swelling
- Pain
- Trauma
- Foreign bodies

While you may not always need a referral from your GP to attend, for certain cases referral letter is needed to ensure that the appropriate examination is conducted based on your specific medical needs.

Timing of Scan?
A soft tissue ultrasound is a relatively quick and straightforward procedure, typically taking about 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
Preparation:
No special preparation needed for this scan. You are advised to wear loose clothing to ensure easy access to the area being scanned
After a thorough examination of the ultrasound images by our Consultant Radiologist, expect the report to reach your GP within 2 working days from the date of your scan.
